What the app reads
- Step count from Apple Health, with your permission, to chart your days, color them, rank them and find your records.
- Date of birth and biological sex from Apple Health, with your permission, only to pick which benchmark group to compare you with. You can skip these and choose a group yourself.
- Your iPhone's motion sensors, only while the app is open and only if you turn on live step counting, to estimate steps as you walk.
The app only reads from Health. It never writes anything to Health.
Where your data goes
Nowhere. Everything the app reads or works out is processed and stored on your iPhone. It is not sent to us or anyone else. The app keeps a copy of your daily step totals on the device so it opens quickly; deleting the app deletes it.
What we don't do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, crash reporting or tracking services.
- No selling or sharing of data, because we never receive any.
Benchmarks
Comparisons with other people use a summary table built into the app from NHANES 2011–2014, a public-domain U.S. health survey dataset published on PhysioNet. The comparison happens on your iPhone; nothing about you is sent anywhere to make it.
Your choices
You can change or revoke the app's access to Health at any time in iPhone Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Steps to Beat. Live step counting can be turned off in the app's Settings.
Children
Steps to Beat is not directed at children under 13, and it doesn't knowingly collect anything from anyone, since no data leaves the device.
